The National Cathedral is home to the Bishop’s Garden and for that it is getting some well deserved highlighting this week!  And a great way to start is to share a fantastic weekend of  Light from May 9th-11th last year.  The event was called Lighting to Unite by Swiss artist Gerry Hofstetter. Hofstetter has been traveling the world lighting everything from icebergs to pyramids.  This was his American debut and it was a hit!  For more on Gerry Hofstetter’s lighting visit http://www.hofstetter-marketing.com/lightart_performances.html The Cathedral has many events throughout the year but this one if you haven’t seen it was just visually mind-blowing!

Each night we headed over to the Cathedral during the weekend to capture the entire show from dusk to midnight.  It was absolutely amazing.  A great side effect was that it brought many early-comers over to the Bishops Garden and that is worth it’s weight in stunning light!

It took a bit to realize there was so much more to see if we just walked around the corner!  Everyone was excitingly milling about!

People came from all over the region and probably some, (I would assume) came from around the country to see this historic event.

The illuminations included everything from this fire front to lovely soothing florals.  We didn’t know what would come next.

If you look closely you can see the crowds own shadow at the bottom of the Cathedral.

There were fish swimming about in light and an ode to the Cathedral’s stained glass.

I think we stayed ’til midnight nearly every night.

After all when else were we going to see an event like this!

The National Cathedral has events all year round.  We’ll take a look at some of the most fun this week as well as peak inside it’s walls and visit it’s nooks and vast spaces and learn more about how many events help pay for the garden’s upkeep.   Tomorrow were heading back to flowers in the Bishop’s Garden for Part III of our visit to the Cathedral and it’s grounds.

‘Til Tomorrow…
