Virginia’s Historic Garden Week by guest blogger Kathy Jentz, editor and publisher of Washington Gardener Magazine!

When is a Garden Tour NOT a Garden Tour?

When it is part of the Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week (www.VAgardenweek.org), of course!

A couple friends and I decided to attend the Garden Club of Fairfax’s tour day of North Arlington neighborhood.

What we didn’t bargain for was that the garden tour had morphed into a well-appointed home tour with lots of lovely show-class flower arrangements in each home, but little in the way of gardens to tour.

Sure the homes were decorated impressively and the yards were nicely landscaped, but nothing spectacular or that I’d recommend for others to make the trip around the beltway.

Pictured here are a few of the eye-catching arrangements and some small highlights.

Here is hoping that next year the garden tour gets back to the basics and show us some local gardens to inspire and awe us.

Kathy Jentz is the editor and Publisher for Washington Gardener Magazine.  She is an avid gardener and purveyor of all things garden event related in the Washington area. Her magazine is absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it.   The gardening information is specifically pegged to zones 6-7 which include all of the D.C. and suburbs.  She also writes the magazines blog http://washingtongardener.blogspot.com/

Well, I would  like to thank Kathy for helping this Bee out this week with a great guest blog!  Check out her magazine!  I for one may just make it out to a garden today for an hour or so.  Well see!  I’m going to try!  Here’s to doing this Bee!

‘Til tomorrow…

Gorgeous designs. I love the arrangements with the nests and eggs, and the one with the vegetables.

Actually, there were many large and beautiful gardens open this year during Historic Garden Week, but on other tours across the state. For example, the magnificent Mount Sharon garden (Orange County tour, April 17) is one of the most spectacular landscapes on the East Coast. If you're looking for gardens, the key is the guidebook description (also available beginning in January on www.VAGardenweek.org). If the write-up about the property focuses more on the home, this is an indication that the house/interior may be of greater interest than the landscape. Also, beginning in January, the Tour Highlights section of the website will highlight gardens of interest. These are house AND garden tours, so it's helpful to do a little homework ahead of time, for the main focus of a particular event. There is "something for everyone" on nearly three dozen tours from the Atlantic to the Blue Ridge. Take your pick!
