Winterthur’s Peony Garden

A couple of weekend ago I finally had the opportunity to visit Winterthur’s Peony Garden.  I’ve been hearing about it all year!

Each year Spring bursts forth in a spectacular way at Winterthur before this garden has even broken ground,  but nothing quite says full Spring like Winterthur’s Peony garden!

It was indeed everything promised and a great destination garden for flower photography.  Some of my favorites include the strong reds.

Although the pink ones are the most romantic!

The blooms are lovely and diverse.

The macro photography opportunities seem endless!

The numerous varieties of Peonies are at their height from May through June.  According to Winterthur, these, “herbaceous and tree peonies,” come, “in a color range of white, pink, red, yellow, bronze, peach, maroon and an almost black variety.”

“Originally designed as an iris garden by Marian Coffin in 1929, it was adapted in 1946 to showcase the work of Dr. A.P. Saunders, a noted peony hybridizer,” they add.

The purple-pinks are have a wonderfully complex structure which would be ideal for a bouquet of cut blooms.  I don’t know the name of this variety, but would love to find out!

Without a doubt the peony groupings are what makes the garden grand.  I just want to walk into them.

And here there are many, many large groupings to photograph!

If you know of another grand peony garden to visit head over to The Bee’s Suggest a Garden Page!  Or write a comment here!  I would love to see more on my journey around the country!  Hope you have a flower-filled weekend!

‘Til Tomorrow…

I love peonies and I love your photography! Great job. You captured their beauty. I agree about the macro photography opportunity. Photography is not my thing, but I find myself taking loads of pictures with my point and shoot sony camera. Were you able to find out the names of the peonies that you were looking for? Peonies are undoubtedly the best looking flowers there are.

I wasn't able to get the name for the peonies but I sure do them. I hope one day to have loads of them in my garden... once I have a garden : )
