River Farm, Home of the American Horticultural Society
Along George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria, Virginia is River Farm, home of the American Horticultural Society. It’s a stunning 25 acre property that is well deserving of many visits. The grounds were given to the Society in 1973 by the Enid A. Haupt Charitable Trust.
The property was owned by George Washington and was one his five farms. There is a wonderfully long history of the property on the American Horticultural Society’s website Aside from the fantastic entryway gardens at the front of the home, there are also a wonderful set of garden areas that are beautifully planted around the back of the house. Just follow the path.
Here they have a selection of hydrangea trees, annuals and perennials alongside the wonderful boxwood and garden trellised pathways.
To the left of this area is a children’s garden. It’s so large and full of so many plants it will have to be it’s own post I’m afraid.
There are side paths that offer even more strolling…
Some paths drop you off in smaller court yards filled with flowers and a place to sit!
There are plenty of places to wander. The formal layout of this particular garden area if perfectly romantic. I especially love the sculpture at the end of the row.
There is also a tremendous four acre meadow in the back of home. I had so much fun wandering through it. Highly recommend it year round. That is having it’s own day on The Photo Garden Bee as well! I may have to post that this week!
The grounds are open 9-5 Monday-Friday and 9-1 on Saturdays.
