they eventually unfurl into the stunning variety of vividly colored, textured petals.

Irises © Britt Conley

But irises are not all petals, they have lovely and complex parts along with their vibrant coloring which together add to their fiery allure.

Irises © Britt Conley

One of the captivating things I love about irises are their petals. Like crossing two time signatures in music: a 4/4 background beat with a 3/4 topper, iris petals have three curled petals which crown the four splayed beneath. It’s one of those great oddities that makes them so wonderfully photogenic.

Irises © Britt Conley

There is a reason so many artists have painted Irises over the centuries. They tower with picturesque perfection above wistfully tall, green grass stems.

Irises © Britt Conley

Odds are if they are in bloom, I’m somewhere hovering over a batch. The Mid-Atlantic is currently in full bloom. Check your local garden’s website for their ‘what’s in bloom’ section to see if it’s time in your area! They are magnificent.

…I managed to arrange my visit just right and see the famed wisterias in full beautiful bloom!

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

The Wisteria Garden is just off the main Flower Garden Walk residing next to the Sundial and Iris Gardens which should be bursting forth next week. Both these adjacent gardens were designed by Pierre du Pont. They are surrounded by lovely hedges which keep the garden experience distraction free.

Iris blooms at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

The wisterias here come in a multitide of colors. The purple are my personal favorite.

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

The blooms hover above..

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

and below…

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

All are stunningly fragrant!!! The aroma under the pergola is akin to being enveloped in lavender honeysuckle.

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

The walk itself is quite romantic. Even long after the wisterias have come and gone.

Wisteria Garden at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

If you can get there this weekend or easily through week and possibly the next, they are still blooming!

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

You can see them up close and personal or be overwhelmed by the overall.

Wisterias in full bloom at Longwood Gardens © Britt Conley

I can’t recommend Longwood enough and here is yet another reason why : )

In all the years I’ve been going to Dumbarton Oaks I’ve never seen them present an artist’s garden installation. That is until now.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

Patrick Doughterty’s extraordinary organic vision in “Easy Rider” is like walking into a Lewis Carol dream. For Dumbarton Oaks, it’s hide and seek match made in heaven.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

Doughterty, who is mostly known for his work with woven saplings, is my favorite garden artist.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

His work is wistful and yet solidly constructive within its structure. This can especially be seen in the photo below which I took a few months ago before the rows of hornbeams filled in.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

Watching Dougherty’s construction process has been fascinating. First he collected his saplings and planted them stiff in the ground.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

He built scaffolding to lift him high enough to weave the branches up into the hornbeans.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

According to Dumbarton Oaks he refers to these sculptures as running figures that pursue one another within the ellipse.

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley

His work is on view until the end of Spring, so I would visit while there is still time. Summer is fast approaching : )

Patrick Dougherty: Easy Rider Photo © Britt Conley
