<p>Each year The All Hallows Guild offers up the extraordinary Flower Mart on the National Cathedral Grounds.  It&#8217;s a great two day event that features everything flowers to crafts and music.  I for one was not disappointed!  From the look of the crowds, I think everyone else had a great time as well!</p>
<div id="attachment_4562" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 589px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/8.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4562" title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/8.jpg" alt="" width="579" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The All Hallows Guild was created in 1916 by Florence Brown Bratenahl as a means to care and beautify the Cathedral grounds and gardens.  Seventy one years later the grounds and gardens are lovely.</p>
<div id="attachment_4552" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 546px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/3.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4552 " title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/3.jpg" alt="" width="536" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The All Hallows Guild was created in 1916 by Florence Brown Bratenahl as a means to care and beautify the Cathedral grounds and gardens.  Seventy one years later the grounds and gardens are lovely.</p>
<div id="attachment_4553" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 567px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/garden.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4553 " title="The Bishops Garden © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/garden.jpg" alt="" width="557" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Bishops Garden © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The Flower Mart is just one of the ways the Guild brings in funds to continue Bratenahl&#8217;s dream.</p>
<div id="attachment_4554" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 537px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/9.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4554 " title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/9.jpg" alt="" width="527" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Here you can by everything from herbs to flower baskets.  There are numerous flower vendors including one of my favorites, Peony&#8217;s Envy!</p>
<div id="attachment_4564" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 502px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/24.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4564" title="Peony's Envy © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/24.jpg" alt="" width="492" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Peony&#39;s Envy © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">The prices were great all around and it seemed there was something for everyone.</p>
<div id="attachment_4555" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 548px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/10.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4555 " title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/10.jpg" alt="" width="538" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Of course the first day often sees the very best florals being carted away by happy local gardeners.</p>
<div id="attachment_4559" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 342px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/251.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4559 " title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/251.jpg" alt="" width="332" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The Arlington Rose Foundation were set up on a hillside on the lawn of the Cathedral selling lovely rose bushes passer&#8217;s by and offering up boothside lectures such as &#8220;Balanced Meals for Roses&#8221;</p>
<div id="attachment_4557" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 531px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/rose-foundation.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4557 " title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/rose-foundation.jpg" alt="" width="521" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>I have a feeling they did pretty well in sales.  Every time we passed by staff was carrying off a rose purchase behind lucky purchasers.</p>
<div id="attachment_4556" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 352px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/6.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4556 " title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/6.jpg" alt="" width="342" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The thing I love most about the event is that it is more a bazaar in feel. The food is just amazing.</p>
<div id="attachment_4560" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 512px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/11.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4560" title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/11.jpg" alt="" width="502" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>My sister Erika and I headed over to The Swiss Bakery and had the greatest bratwurst of our lives.  I kid you not.  They were also offering a lobster roll and frankly I bet it was amazing.  The pastries we bought for desert were right out of another country as well.  As we ate, I toasted the amazing grandmother who must have brought over these recipes!  They were simply beyond authentic they were truely transporting.</p>
<p>The Cathedral also offered up a &#8220;Ukranian Fushion&#8221; High Tea Room which they described as offering, &#8220;both savory and sweet&#8230;(savory meat and potato dumplings) and kanapky (colorful open-faced meat and vegetable sandwiches)&#8230;&#8221; in addition to other Ukranian high tea favorites including black caviar, varenyky, kanapky, fish salad, lemon squares, fruit compote with mascarpone cheese&#8230; etc.  As one who grew up on a Swedish diet, some of this sound neat! I&#8217;ll have to book a seat next year!</p>
<p>They had an abundance of activities for kids.  Everything from puppet shows to slides and even the most charming old merry go round!  I was able to catch some pictures inbetween runs.  I just loved it&#8217;s truely antiquated charm.</p>
<div id="attachment_4571" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 298px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Merry.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4571" title="Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Merry.jpg" alt="" width="288" height="914" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">There were of course tents all over the grounds for shopping!</p>
<div id="attachment_4572" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 307px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/1.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4572" title="Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/1.jpg" alt="" width="297" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Much of it was different per tent.  I especially liked these bird houses!</p>
<div id="attachment_4576" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 291px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/bird.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4576" title="Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/bird.jpg" alt="" width="281" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>I am sorry to say I didn&#8217;t get the name of the company who makes them!  Next year, I promise.</p>
<div id="attachment_4575" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 524px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/23.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4575" title="Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/23.jpg" alt="" width="514" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">There were also these fun bird baths.</p>
<div id="attachment_4590" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 548px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/bath.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4590" title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/bath.jpg" alt="" width="538" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>One woman sold fantastic bird pillows but did not want to have any photographs taken of her booth.  You&#8217;ll just have to find her next year and see for yourself.  There were all types of items for sale as we walked along.</p>
<div id="attachment_4573" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 629px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/2.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4573 " title="Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/2.jpg" alt="" width="619" height="346" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">There was also music everywhere!  Out in front of the Cathedral people lined up in chairs to hear violinists, see dancers and the sort.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_4580" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 631px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sitting.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4580" title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sitting.jpg" alt="" width="621" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">On the right side of the grounds there were three drum sets offering up a fantastic beat for passers by.</p>
<div id="attachment_4578" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 313px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/71.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4578" title="Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/71.jpg" alt="" width="303" height="432" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">And of course the National Cathedral Information booth was ready to get people inside!</p>
<div id="attachment_4579" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 523px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/20.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4579" title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/20.jpg" alt="" width="513" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">After all the Cathedral is worth the visit any day!  For more information on the cathedral visit <a href="http://www.nationalcathedral.org" target="_blank">http://www.nationalcathedral.org</a></p>
<div id="attachment_4581" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 535px"><a href="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/21.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4581" title="The Flower Mart © Britt Conley" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/21.jpg" alt="" width="525" height="360" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Flower Mart © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>All in all is was great!  The winds were so fierce at one point our food would just not stay on the table without holding it! That was fun.  All in all, we were happily sun kissed, wind whipped and well feed! I highly recommend it for a nice day all around.  For more information on The All Hallows Guild visit their website <a href="http://www.allhallowsguild.org/" target="_blank">http://www.allhallowsguild.org</a>/</p>
<p>&#8216;Til Tomorrow&#8230;</p>

<p>As the Photo Garden Bee I mostly cover gardens over the week but in some cases I expand to cover the places that host those gardens. In this case the host of the Bishop&#8217;s Garden highlighted this week is the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The National Cathedral is a destination in and of itself for obvious reasons. But what many may not know is just how fun many of the Cathedral events are. Every October, for example, there is the annual Blessing of the Animals.</p>
<div id="attachment_1751" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 552px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1751" title="Blessing of the Animals" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/main-dog.jpg" alt="A day for you and your pets! Photo Courtesy The Washington National Cathedral." width="542" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">A day for you and your pets! Photo Courtesy The Washington National Cathedral.</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Such blessings are held worldwide on various dates. The Cathedral, however, holds theirs on October 4, the Feast Day for St. Francis of Assisi.</p>
<div id="attachment_1752" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 569px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1752" title="Blessing of the Animals" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/donkey.jpg" alt="What a great day to visit the Cathedral! Photo courtesy of the Washington National Cathedral." width="559" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">What a great day to visit the Cathedral! Photo courtesy of the Washington National Cathedral.</p></div>
<p>St. Francis was known for his love and care for animals. The priest or other religious representative sprinkles holy water on the heads of the animals and pronounces a blessing.</p>
<div id="attachment_1754" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 538px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1754" title="Blessing of the Animals" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/pup.jpg" alt="For the smaller four legged members of the Family! <div id="attachment_1753" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 559px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1753" title="Blessing of the Animals" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/donkey-2.jpg" alt="What a fun day! <div id="attachment_1755" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 523px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1755" title="Blessing of the Animals" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/doggie.jpg" alt="A great day for Dogs! <div id="attachment_1756" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1756" title="Blessing of the Animals" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/ferret.jpg" alt="Even the family ferret can take part. Photo courtesy The Washington National Cathedral." width="504" height="427" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Even the family ferret can take part. Photo courtesy The Washington National Cathedral.</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">As you can see all animals are happily accepted.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_1757" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1757" title="messiah" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/messiah.jpg" alt="The choir sings Handel's Messiah. Photo courtesy The Washington National Cathedral." width="504" height="241" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The choir sings Handel&#39;s Messiah. <p>Another remarkable event is the choir’s annual performance of Handel’s Messiah. Composed in 1741, this oratorio continues to please audiences worldwide. This years musical extravaganza was just held last weekend under the musical direction of Michael McCarthy. If you missed this phenomenal 2 1/2 hour event mark your calendars for next year. It’s well worth the trip!</p>
<div id="attachment_1758" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 444px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1758" title="flower mart" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/flower-mart.jpg" alt="Flower Mart has flowers and more! © Karon Flage" width="434" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Flower Mart has flowers and more! © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p>Also, another must do annual event is the All Hallows Guild&#8217;s Flower Mart. Held each year during the first weekend of May, the National Cathedral grounds are covered with flower vendors and flower related fun and food. The National Cathedral states on their webstie that the Flower Mart, &#8220;features plant sales, floral and horticultural displays, boutique booths, tasty foods, music and entertainment, plus fun activities for children, including rides on the antique carousel. Proceeds benefit the Cathedral’s gardens, grounds and woodlands. Free admission. Rain or shine.&#8221; Proceeds from the weekend help with the upkeep and mantainence of the Bishop’s Garden.</p>
<div id="attachment_47" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 298px"><img class="size-full wp-image-47" title="09 rose" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/09-rose2.jpg" alt="Rose © Britt Conley" width="288" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Rose © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">This year The Photo Garden Bee will be selling black and white flower prints at the festival.</p>
<p>Lastly is the rare Cathedral event. There are many of these that the public often does not get a chance to see but we have a sneak peak at what looks like one of the most amazing events held. On the cathedral&#8217;s 100th anniversary, in 2007, they held a gala in honor of Bishop Desmond Tutu.</p>
<div id="attachment_1759" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1759" title="NatCathrl@100_JPH1DS_5231-lo-1" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/NatCathrl@100_JPH1DS_5231-lo-1.jpg" alt="The 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner. <p>According to the National Cathedral, this was the only time a formal black-tie candle-lit dinner has been held in the knave of the cathedral. This must have been quite the night for everyone!</p>
<div id="attachment_1760" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1760" title="party" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/party.jpg" alt="The candle-lit black tie 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner. <p>There are events all year round at the Cathedral. One of the ones I most want to attend is the weekly tour and tea held at 1:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays most weeks. The tour begins in the nave and ends in the Observation Gallery with tea. Currently, the Angels tour being offered for December 15th and 16th the National Cathedral cites, includes looking at, “angels in the myriad ways they appear throughout the Cathedral. See angels expressed in the Cathedral arts—stained glass, needlepoint, woodcarving, and stonecarving“</p>
<div id="attachment_1761" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 445px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1761" title="tea" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/tea1.jpg" alt="The famous Tour and Tea! <p>This post doesn&#8217;t even include the variety of upcoming Religious Holiday events that are sure to be wonderful! Please stop by the Cathedral&#8217;s Events page at <a href="http://www.nationalcathedral.org/visit/calendar.shtml " target="_blank">http://www.nationalcathedral.org/visit/calendar.shtml</a></p>
<p>And as always be sure to stop by the Washington National Cathedrals home page for more information about the Cathedral, it&#8217;s grounds and of course the Bishop&#8217;s Garden. <a href="http://www.nationalcathedral.org/visit/calendar.shtml " target="_blank">http://www.nationalcathedral.org</a></p>
<p>Today&#8217;s post is brought to you by a tag team effort by both Britt and Erika!</p>
<p>Hope you enjoyed a fun look at the National Cathedral this week! Don&#8217;t forget if you know of a great Garden to go visit let me know on the &#8220;suggest a garden&#8221; page. A great garden tip is always appreciated!</p>
<p>&#8216;Til Tomorrow,</p>
<p>Britt</p>

<p>I mainly write about gardens for seven days but I&#8217;ve found this week it&#8217;s also a joy to write about the places where gardens are offered. The National Cathedral is one of those phenomenal places. As it&#8217;s getting close to winter many of us are trying to move indoors. However, the Bishop&#8217;s Garden is still a wonderful cold weather retreat. If your not in the mood to put on the layers to stroll about outdoors at least consider driving to the Cathedral&#8217;s easy parking underground garage and walk the short distance over to the Herb Cottage Shop! It&#8217;s the perfect place to get Christmas presents for your garden loving friends! The Herb Cottage is especially wonderful for those who love all things gardens and the proceeds go directly to the upkeep of the gardens and the Cathedral grounds. That is indeed money well spent! It&#8217;s a fun trip for one and probably even more fun if you go with a friend. There are loads of Christmas items for sale as well.</p>
<div id="attachment_1718" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 638px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1718" title="tea" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/tea.jpg" alt="Tea Pots at the Herb Cottage © Britt Conley" width="628" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Tea Pots at the Herb Cottage © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>This is my kind of shop! As an avid fine tea drinker, I am thrilled with the teas here from Taylors of Harrogate, Harrison and Crosfield. There are wonderful tea pots and all thing related to this, my favorite activity when I&#8217;m not out shooting gardens.</p>
<div id="attachment_1719" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 610px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1719" title="tea pots" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/tea-pots.jpg" alt="Gotta love a shop for tea drinkers! © Britt Conley" width="600" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Gotta love a shop for tea drinkers! © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center; ">Of course being the Herb Cottage, there are rows of herbs for sale. The cottage has been providing herbs for decades as part of their rich history.</p>
<div id="attachment_1722" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1722" title="herbs" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/herbs.jpg" alt="The Herb Cottage Herbs © Britt Conley" width="504" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Herb Cottage Herbs © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Additionally, there are garden items for sale to help keep your garden lovely all year. These garden stakes are wonderful! Read the labels!</p>
<div id="attachment_1724" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 602px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1724" title="stakes" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/stakes.jpg" alt="Herb Stakes © Britt Conley" width="592" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Herb Stakes © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">There is a large bin of these wonderfully witty items and just in time for Christmas!</p>
<div id="attachment_1723" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 471px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1723" title="garden themes" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/garden-themes.jpg" alt="Items for your garden! © Britt Conley" width="461" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Items for your garden! © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>With names like Key lime Marmalade and Mango Butter, these preserves and jams are a great gift! There were rows of these against the far wall and I&#8217;ll be heading back to get some for my tea and toast this holiday season!</p>
<div id="attachment_1725" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 603px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1725" title="preserves" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/preserves.jpg" alt="Herb Cottage Preserves © Britt Conley" width="593" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Herb Cottage Preserves © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">And for many, what would a great cup of tea be without some honey! This great honey display jar is &#8220;sweet!&#8221;</p>
<div id="attachment_1726" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 250px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1726" title="honey" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/honey.jpg" alt="Honey Jar © Britt Conley" width="240" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Honey Jar © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">And, for those of us who still love to give and receive real snail mail, there are really fun note card options here as well as notebooks and the sort! Of course they even had a separate card center!</p>
<div id="attachment_1729" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 573px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1729" title="cards" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cards2.jpg" alt="All things for writers © Britt Conley" width="563" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">All things for writers © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Being the &#8220;Holiday Season&#8221; I would be remiss to not show some of the fun Christmas ornaments they offer here. The first and my very favorite is this Moose! I don&#8217;t know why I love it so, but it&#8217;s just so darn cute.</p>
<div id="attachment_1730" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 549px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1730" title="moose" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/moose.jpg" alt="The Moose © Britt Conley" width="539" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Moose © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The Herb Cottage also sells these wonderful little woodland creature ornaments that are quite fun for the nature lovers tree. The rabbit and owl are great!</p>
<div id="attachment_1731" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 537px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1731" title="woodland 2" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/woodland-2.jpg" alt="woodland creatures for the tree © Britt Conley" width="527" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">woodland creatures for the tree © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>And the bird may just have to be bought for my birding enthusiast, sister and editor for my dyslexic spelling, Erika. You didn&#8217;t read and edit this part Erika. ; )</p>
<div id="attachment_1732" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 519px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1732" title="woodland 1" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/woodland-1.jpg" alt="Birds and Noah's Arc © Britt Conley" width="509" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Birds and Noah&#39;s Arc © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Of course it wouldn&#8217;t be Christmas without Santa and he is waiting here at the Herb Cottage.</p>
<div id="attachment_1733" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 266px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1733" title="santa" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/santa.jpg" alt="Christmas Santa © Britt Conley" width="256" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Christmas Santa © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">And for the very classy gift giver or tree decorator, there are hand blown glass ornaments here that are just beautiful.</p>
<div id="attachment_1734" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 538px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1734" title="ornaments" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/ornaments.jpg" alt="Hand blown glass ornaments © Britt Conley" width="528" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Hand blown glass ornaments © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Today&#8217;s post may be light on text but I am hoping these photos give the gift of the Herb Cottage experience. There are loads of other items including lamps and dishes that lure me toward them every time! The gift shop website cites that the, &#8220;historic Herb Cottage features elegant and unusual gifts &#8211; Home Décor &#8211; Lamps &#8211; Wedding &amp; Baby Gifts &#8211; Pottery &#8211; Cache Pots &#8211; Kitchen &amp; Garden Accessories &#8211; Scented Oils &amp; Soaps &#8211; Cards &amp; Stationery.&#8221; as well as, &#8220;Cathedral-related items, Handmade, Fairtrade, and American-made gifts&#8221; The holidays is a great time to give back to the Bishop&#8217;s garden through the All Hallows Guild.</p>
<p>For more information visit <a href="http://www.allhallowsguild.org/cottage/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.allhallowsguild.org/cottage/index.html</a></p>
<p>Tomorrow were heading back over to the Cathedral for an inside look at some of it&#8217;s extraordinary events!</p>
<p>As for me, still unemployed but still smiling because I get to do The Photo Garden Bee : )</p>
<p>&#8216;Til tomorrow,</p>
<p>Britt : )</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The Washington National Cathedral, home to the Bishop&#8217;s Garden, is one the great architectural feats in U.S. history.  Its 83 year construction was under the supervison of five architects and thousands of mason and sculptors from September 29th, 1907 &#8211; September 29th, 1990.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1687" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 407px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1687" title="cathedral britt" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral-britt.jpg" alt="The National Cathedral © Britt Conley" width="397" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The National Cathedral © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">Much of the Gothic Style architecture of the Cathedral is made of huge limestone blocks. The Flying butresses are stone. The Roof is constructed with steel beams.  Together this massive structure is 234 feet tall, weighs 150,000 tons and is over 83, 012 square feet.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1688" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 440px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1688" title="cathedral28" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral28.jpg" alt="The National Cathedral© Britt Conley" width="430" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The National Cathedral© Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">In the Spring you can actually climb the 333 steps of the tower for 45 minutes and then take the view from one of the highest points in the City.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_1689" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 248px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1689" title="3838252709_4ba220af16 copy" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/3838252709_4ba220af16-copy.jpg" alt="The tower climb © Karon Flage" width="238" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The tower climb © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">Washington photographer Karon S. Flage has been shooting the Cathedral for years. Her talented handling of the serenity of the interior architectural experience and her fantastic ability to capture the feel within the effects of the stained glass filling these hallowed walls makes her my first guest Photographer! She deserves the bulk of today&#8217;s post.  Karon&#8217;s work has been in the Arlington Art Show, Artomatic and, of course, on Flicker. <a style="color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/karonf/" target="_blank">http://www.flickr.com/photos/karonf/</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1690" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 296px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1690" title="2974509847_f578fdc821 copy" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2974509847_f578fdc821-copy.jpg" alt="The Main Nave © Karon Flage" width="286" height="432" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Main Nave © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: center;">Over 800,000 people come to see the 215 stained glass windows and incredible Gothic Style architecture. And from Miss. Flage&#8217;s images you can clearly see why.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_1691" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 296px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1691" title="2975362584_6e67c04724 copy" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2975362584_6e67c04724-copy.jpg" alt="Cathedral Light © Karon Flage" width="286" height="432" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Cathedral Light © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: center;">The Cathedral has a sense of magic that is truly amazing.  I know I&#8217;ve said that before, but really, it&#8217;s a beautiful place to be in.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_1692" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 296px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1692" title="2985200095_731b35c67f copy" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2985200095_731b35c67f-copy.jpg" alt="The light reflections are stunning here © Karon Flage" width="286" height="432" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The light reflections are stunning here © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: center;">Some of the best light is on a strong sunny day.  I realize I have often suggested that you shoot close ups when it&#8217;s cloudy for the best light but for stained glass you want a strong light.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_1694" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 207px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1694" title="247996934_24dc7d117f copy" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/247996934_24dc7d117f-copy.jpg" alt="Light flooding in © Karon Flage" width="197" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Light flooding in © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">Karon has been all over the Washington Cathedral and these are only a handful of her great work here.  Please stop by her web page and Flicker account to see even more!  Karon explains her eye in that she looks, &#8220;for the visually interesting. It can be something as traditional as the Cherry Blossom Festival with the thousands of photos that come from it or as overlooked as the pattern shopping carts make against a brick wall. My flickr stream is updated on a daily to weekly basis if you would like to see more.&#8221; I&#8217;ve seen her work and it&#8217;s great!<br />
<a href="http://photography.lostchaos.com/" target="_blank">http://photography.lostchaos.com/</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1693" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 265px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1693" title="264440558_39858abf00-2 copy" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/264440558_39858abf00-2-copy.jpg" alt="Karon captures stunning windows in high places © Karon Flage" width="255" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Karon captures stunning windows in high places © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">The Cathedral holds over 200 stained glass windows.  My favorite window of all is The Space Window or lesser known &#8220;Scientists and Technicians Window&#8221; by Rodney Winfield. It illustrates our exploration toward space and the moon. In the upper center of the window is a large red glass sphere. Inside that is an actual piece of the moon. According to Newport Mansions, this, &#8220;7.18-gram basalt lunar rock from the Sea of Tranquility, presented to the Cathedral by the astronauts of Apollo XI. Rodney Winfield’s celebrated Space window captures our wonder at the cosmos.&#8221; I can not count the times I have starred into this wonder. It&#8217;s usually the first place I go to contemplate when I visit.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1696" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 282px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1696" title="208689661_f068fd5691" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/208689661_f068fd5691.jpg" alt="The &quot;Space Window&quot; or what I fondly call &quot;The Moon Rock Window: © Karon Flage" width="272" height="432" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The &quot;Space Window&quot; or what I fondly call &quot;The Moon Rock Window: © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">Karon also captured this perfect picture of artist Rowan LeCompte talking about his over 50 stained glass creations for the Cathedral during the Cathedral&#8217;s 100th ANniversary weekend. For the great transcript of LeCompte telling his story of making stained glass for the Cathedral since the late 1930s visit : http://www.nationalcathedral.org/learn/lectureTexts/MED-4565U-TT001L.shtml</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1697" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 250px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1697" title="2245940532_34d17e1884" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2245940532_34d17e1884.jpg" alt="Rowan LeCompte who created over 40 stained glass windows for the Cathedral including his first one when he was 16 years old. © Karon Flage" width="240" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Rowan LeCompte who created over 40 stained glass windows for the Cathedral including his first one when he was 16 years old. © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;">The National Cathedral has so much to offer visually, there are the gargoyles, the sculptures and the bosses and the extraordinary tours: Highlights Tours, Behind the Scene, Tour and Tea on certain Tuesdays and Wednesdays through out the month  (I can&#8217;t wait to go to this and now that I&#8217;m laid off, looks like I&#8217;ll finally get the chance!!!), Garden Tours, Patriotic Tours, Congressional Constituent Tours and my very favorite, Art and Architecture Tours!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<div id="attachment_1698" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 573px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1698" title="Christmas 2003" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Christmashighaltar.jpg" alt="The High Altar at Christmas. <p style="text-align: center;">And don&#8217;t forget to walk around the exterior looking at the gargoyles and the amazing architecture.  It&#8217;s a local favorite spot for night time photography in Washington.</p>
<div id="attachment_1699" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 298px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1699" title="ExteriorEvening-1" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/ExteriorEvening-1.jpg" alt="The National Cathedral at night. <p style="text-align: center;">Well this tour has gone by far too fast and it seems small in comparison to what the Cathedral has to offer.  I urge everyone to find a way to see this amazing American effort and bring your cameras!  For more information visit <a href="http://www.nationalcathedral.org " target="_blank">http://www.nationalcathedral.org</a></p>
<div id="attachment_1700" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 304px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1700" title="West Front at dusk" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/West-Facade-cath.jpg" alt="The West front of the Cathedral at dusk. <p style="text-align: center;">As for the Bee, tomorrow were taking a sneak peak at a handful of amazing events that happen at the Cathedral.  An inside and outside look at fun that is had there!  I hope you enjoyed our visit.</p>
<p>&#8216;Til Tomorrow&#8230;</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve seen the over all feel of the Bishop&#8217;s garden on Sunday, with it&#8217;s boxwoods and European styling and lovely pathways and little surprising places to sit. The main reason people come is for the flowers.   Like many gardens, the Bishop&#8217;s Garden has tremendous charm throughout the changing floral season.  In Spring it&#8217;s full of fun purples and pinks with floral wonders on tall stems waiting for the bee.</p>
<div id="attachment_1658" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 531px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1658" title="purple" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/purple.jpg" alt="These Purple beauties are a delight! © Britt Conley" width="521" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">These Purple beauties are a delight! © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center; ">Tulips are a Spring favorite and here is no different.  Local photographer Karon Flage caught these at their peak!  Her floral and garden photography is great!  She also shoots just about everything!  You can see her work at <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/karonf/" target="_blank">http://www.flickr.com/photos/karonf/</a></p>
<div id="attachment_1657" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 456px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1657" title="485079405_657ad9553c_o" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/485079405_657ad9553c_o.jpg" alt="Tulips in the Bishop's Garden © Britt Conley" width="446" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Tulips in the Bishop&#39;s Garden © Karon Flage</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center; ">The Fall is actually one of my favorite times to shoot when the roses are still out but the fauna has changed colors.  It makes for lovely color combinations.</p>
<div id="attachment_1661" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 537px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1661" title="Roses bishops 1" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Roses-bishops-1.jpg" alt="Roses © Britt Conley" width="527" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Roses © Britt Conley</p></div>
<div id="attachment_1662" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1662" title="multi roses" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/multi-roses.jpg" alt="The Bishop's Garden's Roses © Britt Conley" width="504" height="331" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Bishop&#39;s Garden&#39;s Roses © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center; ">As with many gardens the Bishop&#8217;s Garden is at its greatest splendor in the Spring.</p>
<div id="attachment_1665" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 500px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1665" title="Bishops Garden Upper Border cath copy right" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Bishops-Garden-Upper-Border-cath-copy-right1.jpg" alt="The Upper Perennial Border. <p style="text-align: center; ">Just the other week the garden was bursting upward with fall color!</p>
<p style="text-align: center; ">
<div id="attachment_1672" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 538px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1672" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Wild-summer-garden.jpg" alt="This should be a wild Summer garden but it's Fall! © Britt Conley" width="528" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">This should be a wild Summer garden but it&#39;s Fall! © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center; ">There is so much more to this garden than it&#8217;s flowers, creative pathways and hidden corners.  There is rich European history here if you just know where to look!</p>
<div id="attachment_1667" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 555px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1667" title="herb 2" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/herb-2.jpg" alt="The Font in the center of the Bishop's Garden © Britt Conley" width="545" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Font in the center of the Bishop&#39;s Garden © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Nancy Symington, describes in her work, PLAQUES, ARTIFACTS, STATUES AND FOUNTAINS IN THE BISHOP’S GARDEN AND ELSEWHERE ON THE CATHEDRAL CLOSE, that the font in the center of the garden, &#8220;is attributed to the time of Charlemagne and is reported to have come from the Abbey of St. Julie in the Aisne. The top is marble and the pedestal is of Caen limestone. It was an acquisition from the collection of George Grey Barnard.&#8221;</p>
<div id="attachment_1668" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 249px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1668" title="sun dial" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/sun-dial.jpg" alt="The Sun-dial © Britt Conley" width="239" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Sun-dial © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The Sundial, she continues, is &#8220;18th century English Bronze&#8221; which, rests, &#8220;on a 13th century Gothic capital of Caen limestone from a ruined monastery near Rheims Cathedral. &#8221;  Symington also points us toward the upper perennial border where there is a wonderful Celtic cross titled The Wayside Cross, which she describes for us as, &#8221; a round-headed or wheel cross,&#8230; made of sandstone, (which dates) from early Christian pilgrimages.&#8221;</p>
<div id="attachment_1669" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 381px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1669" title="Oct-1. 07 Gardens-Joe 025" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Oct-1.-07-Gardens-Joe-025.jpg" alt="The Wayside Cross.  Photo courtesy the National Cathedral." width="371" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Wayside Cross.  Photo courtesy the National Cathedral.</p></div>
<p>Overall the Bishop&#8217;s garden is a Washington destination garden.  If you haven&#8217;t been there, take yourself.  When you do come to visit look, for the little cottage shop and to it&#8217;s left on the &#8220;South Road&#8221; is the Norman style arch and entrance to this tranquil secret garden.</p>
<div id="attachment_1673" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 255px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1673" title="door" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/door.jpg" alt="The entrance to the Bishop's Garden © Britt Conley" width="245" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The entrance to the Bishop&#39;s Garden © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>After visiting the garden, hit the Garden Shop.  It too is a destination!  Most importantly when you visit, spend as much time as you can in the Cathedral.  It is one the great landmarks of Washington DC and the Nation.  We will be taking a visit through the Cathedral this week and it&#8217;s worth every minute!</p>
<p>Come back tomorrow for more of our National Cathedral.</p>
<p>&#8216;Til Tomorrow&#8230;</p>

<p>The National Cathedral is home to the Bishop&#8217;s Garden and for that it is getting some well deserved highlighting this week!  And a great way to start is to share a fantastic weekend of  Light from May 9th-11th last year.  The event was called Lighting to Unite by Swiss artist Gerry Hofstetter. Hofstetter has been traveling the world lighting everything from icebergs to pyramids.  This was his American debut and it was a hit!  For more on Gerry Hofstetter&#8217;s lighting visit <a href="http://www.hofstetter-marketing.com/lightart_performances.html" target="_blank">http://www.hofstetter-marketing.com/lightart_performances.html</a> The Cathedral has many events throughout the year but this one if you haven&#8217;t seen it was just visually mind-blowing!</p>
<div id="attachment_1633" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 509px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1633" title="new cathedral22" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/new-cathedral22.jpg" alt="The Cathedral © Britt Conley" width="499" height="356" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Cathedral © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Each night we headed over to the Cathedral during the weekend to capture the entire show from dusk to midnight.  It was absolutely amazing.  A great side effect was that it brought many early-comers over to the Bishops Garden and that is worth it&#8217;s weight in stunning light!</p>
<div id="attachment_1628" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 385px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1628" title="1 view light" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/1-view-light.jpg" alt="The beginning © Britt Conley" width="375" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The beginning © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">It took a bit to realize there was so much more to see if we just walked around the corner!  Everyone was excitingly milling about!</p>
<div id="attachment_1629" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 440px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1629" title="cathedral9" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral9.jpg" alt="The National Cathedral in Light © Britt Conley" width="430" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The National Cathedral in Light © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">People came from all over the region and probably some, (I would assume) came from around the country to see this historic event.</p>
<div id="attachment_1630" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 397px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1630" title="2 view light" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2-view-light.jpg" alt="The Cathedral Wrapped in Light © Britt Conley" width="387" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Cathedral Wrapped in Light © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">The illuminations included everything from this fire front to lovely soothing florals.  We didn&#8217;t know what would come next.</p>
<div id="attachment_1631" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 440px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1631" title="cathedral14" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral14.jpg" alt="One of my favorite color combinations © Britt Conley" width="430" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">One of my favorite color combinations © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">If you look closely you can see the crowds own shadow at the bottom of the Cathedral.</p>
<div id="attachment_1632" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 410px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1632" title="3 view light" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/3-view-light.jpg" alt="From any angle the view was amazing © Britt Conley" width="400" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">From any angles the view was amazing © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">There were fish swimming about in light and an ode to the Cathedral&#8217;s stained glass.</p>
<div id="attachment_1634" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 440px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1634" title="cathedral6" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral6.jpg" alt="An experience to remember © Britt Conley" width="430" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">An experience to remember © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Thousands of people were out tonight, milling about laughing, oooing and ahhhing.  It really was a fun weekend!</p>
<div id="attachment_1639" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 440px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1639" title="cathedral19" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral19.jpg" alt="Wonderfully Patriotic © Britt Conley" width="430" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Wonderfully Patriotic © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Before we knew it the weekend was wrapping up.</p>
<div id="attachment_1638" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 440px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1638" title="cathedral21" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cathedral21.jpg" alt="Near the end of a great evening © Britt Conley" width="430" height="288" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Near the end of a great evening © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">I think we stayed &#8217;til midnight nearly every night.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">After all when else were we going to see an event like this!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The National Cathedral has events all year round.  We&#8217;ll take a look at some of the most fun this week as well as peak inside it&#8217;s walls and visit it&#8217;s nooks and vast spaces and learn more about how many events help pay for the garden&#8217;s upkeep.   Tomorrow were heading back to flowers in the Bishop&#8217;s Garden for Part III of our visit to the Cathedral and it&#8217;s grounds.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">&#8216;Til Tomorrow&#8230;</p>

<p>The National Cathedral in Washington D.C. is home to the famed Bishop&#8217;s Garden, a fantastic sunken oasis of tranquility and delight.  This is a garden meant to sit in, to wander and be alone in.  Even when it&#8217;s full on weekends one can journey through it&#8217;s nooks and crannies and feel serene.  The garden was meant to offer a place to meditate and reflect.  Looking upward the view of the Cathedral just adds to its glory.</p>
<div id="attachment_1581" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 370px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1581" title="G018OlmsteadJr" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/G018OlmsteadJr.jpg" alt="Law Olmsted , Jr., Photo courtesy The National Cathedral." width="360" height="286" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Law Olmsted , Jr., Photo courtesy The National Cathedral.</p></div>
<p>In the early 1900&#8242;s the famed National Cathedral Bishops Garden was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted , Jr. and Florence Bratenhal, wife of the second dean. Olmsted was the first to plan the Cathedral Grounds from 1907-1928. The All Hallows Guild explains he,</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;designed the Pilgrim Road winding up Mt. St. Alban from Garfield Street, South Road to Bethlehem Chapel where the nave foundation was being laid, and the Bishop’s House (now Church House) garden with its surrounding walls and lawn which included herb, rose and perennial beds. Leaving intact the native woodland and stream on the south slope, he clustered buildings to conserve open space. To provide a sense of historic permanence and tranquility to the close, he designated mature, often evergreen, plantings.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>Florence, who eventually became the Cathedral&#8217;s landscape designer from 1928-36 created the All Hallows Guild in 1916 in order to beautify and care for the gardens. According to All Hallows Guild, &#8220;Her work includes the designs for the Norman Court entrance to the Bishop’s Lawn, the Pool of St. Catherine and the Pilgrim Steps with adjacent plantings, as well as the landscaping of the College of Preachers and early planting plans for the Bishop’s Garden Hortulus and Upper Perennial Border.&#8221;</p>
<p>All Hallows Guild is still providing the care and upkeep of the gardens through the wonderful Cathedral Gardens Herb Cottage shop, Tour &amp; Tea programs and fantastic Flower Mart held each year in May.</p>

<p>Today the Bishop&#8217;s Garden is in full care.  There are herb gardens, perennial borders, and a large English style open park like space with bench for reading and taking in the Spring and Summer air.</p>
<div id="attachment_1584" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 575px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1584" title="The-Bishop's-Garden-full-bloom" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/The-Bishops-Garden-full-bloom.jpg" alt="The Bishop's Garden in Fall © Britt Conley" width="565" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Bishop&#39;s Garden in Fall © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<p style="text-align: center;">Norman style Architectural elements brought together by Florence Bratenhal brings the Cathedral in the garden space.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div id="attachment_1585" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 285px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1585" title="norman-1" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/norman-1.jpg" alt="I love this fountain and have fond memories of first walking in her with my grandparents. © Britt Conley" width="275" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">I love this fountain and have fond memories of first walking in here with my grandparents around the age of Five. © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>There are stairs and pathways that are peaceful and romantic bordered with the wonderful boxwoods Florence Bratenhal put in.</p>
<div id="attachment_1586" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 280px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1586" title="stairs" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/stairs.jpg" alt="The stone stairway in the Bishop's Garden. © Britt Conley" width="270" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The stone stairway in the Bishop&#39;s Garden. © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">There are wonderful benches and places to sit throughout the enclosed garden that make this place a weekend destination for those who like to relax.</p>
<div id="attachment_1589" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 514px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1589" title="bench-bishops" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/bench-bishops.jpg" alt="A whimsical bench waiting at the Bishop's Garden © Britt Conley" width="504" height="312" /><p class="wp-caption-text">A whimsical bench waiting at the Bishop&#39;s Garden © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>Even better, the pathways and benches are just as exciting and inviting as the flowers.  This is a garden that was designed to be walked through and relaxed in.</p>
<div id="attachment_1590" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 509px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1590" title="trails-and-benches" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/trails-and-benches.jpg" alt="The Bishop's Garden Journey © Britt Conley" width="499" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Bishop&#39;s Garden Journey © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The over feel of this garden experience is peaceful tranquility.  It&#8217;s really one of my favorite places to go think.  It has both big open spaces to sit and read in and a small places with quiet nooks. One side of the garden is an open grassy area that reminds me of a small English park.</p>
<div id="attachment_1596" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 550px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1596" title="park" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/park.jpg" alt="The large grassy are is one of my favorite places to read and enjoy the day © Britt Conley" width="540" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The large grassy is one of my favorite places to read and enjoy the day © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">The other side is the floral and herb gardens and Shadow House.</p>
<div id="attachment_1595" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 552px"><img class="size-full wp-image-1595" title="Covered" src="http://thephotogardenbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Covered.jpg" alt="The Shadow House Gazebo © Britt Conley" width="542" height="360" /><p class="wp-caption-text">The Shadow House Gazebo © Britt Conley</p></div>
<p>The National Cathedral Newsletter, which featured the restoration of the Shadow House Gazebo this year, states, &#8220;The Shadow House was designed by Cathedral architect Philip Hubert Frohman and constructed between 1927 and 1928. It received its name from a medieval term for &#8216;gazebo&#8217;, and is made of locally quarriedCarderock stone that once was part of President Grover Cleveland’s summer home, Red Top.&#8221;</p>
<p>There is so much more to explore here and that is why the Bishop&#8217;s Garden is getting a more in depth feature in part III of this week to focus on the flower beds themselves.  There are some wonderful flowers here! Additionally this week will also feature the National Cathedral itself.  Without it we would not have the gardens!  Therefore it will get much of the week!  One of the big events last year was the splendor of the National Cathedral wrapped in light by Swiss artist Gerry Hofstetter!  He brought colorful floral, and other patterned light to the facade as thousands came to see.  I for one think that alone deserves it&#8217;s own day!</p>
<p>&#8216;Til Tomorrow!</p>
