Lewis Ginter’s Conservatory captures the visitor immediately with it’s grand entrance view. It’s turn of the century style has a World’s Fair flair and certainly offers great expectations from us. The glass jewel house is 11,000 square feet supporting a dome that rises over 60 feet.
The right side of the conservatory is the tropical collection which boasts many exotic plants and trees. The Orchids are lovely with shades including yellows, blues, whites and magentas among others. I had a list of notes as to their names but will have to get them again on my next visit this weekend.
The tropical feel offsets the Virginia landscape nicely. One enters the main hall and is immediately met by tall Palm trees and the feeling we’re in another world. The heat is great in the cooler months!
There are fountains and sculptures within the wing that bring in a whole new atmosphere.
The North wing of the Conservatory is used for seasonal displays. Erika and I had the pleasure of visiting here during their Butterfly exhibition: Butterflies Live which was held between May and October of this year. It was quite fun and really great for the kids we saw. The parents seemed to enjoy the odd butterfly resting on one of their shirts. This butterfly was fantastic! And yes it’s real!
This particular conservatory wing is host to a big Christmas display which I am headed to this Friday. I am really looking forward to photographing the Holiday decorations as well as the grand display of holiday lights!
On the left side of the Conservatory is a kids section complete with Peter Rabbit’s Cottage.
There are many plants here and fun little sculptures for children to find.
Overall, the Conservatory has something for everyone, especially during a specialty season display. It’s yet another place kid’s can look forward to going as well as the adults. My bet is that the Christmas display will be lovely. Hope to see you there this Friday evening! As always, for more information visit… www.lewisginter.org
Tomorrow we’re heading over to the Lewis Ginter Shop! A great place to get presents for your garden loving friends!
